A Beginner’s Guide To Building Your First WordPress?.Com Website

Goal

At the end of this session, you will:

  • Be the proud owner of a WordPress.com website
  • Choose a design (“theme”) for your website
  • Upload a photo and display it on your website
  • Add text and a link to your website
  • Create a new page for your website
  • Edit your site’s main navigation menu

Agenda

  1. Introductions
  2. Set up your own WordPress.com account. Email confirmation can take up to 30 minutes. If you already have an account, help someone who does not.
  3. What do you hope to get out of this class? Each person will answer individually.
  4. What is WordPress?  What is WordPress.com?
  5. What can WordPress.com do (and not do) for you?
  6. Creating Content
    – Create your first web page
    – Create your first blog post
    – Add a photo and a photo gallery
    – Text edit
  7. Configuring Your Website
    – Set home page to either a static page or your blog/news via Settings –> Reading
    – Change the theme
  8. Questions?
